Are you ready for some football? The Rockford Youth Football Association is very excited about our next season of play. Listed below is all of the information you need to know, Go Rockets!
Participation in RAAA tackle football is grades 3rd – 6th. Cost to participate is $75.00 as well as a $25.00 Jersey fee. The Jerseys are multi-year, which means they can be used as long as they fit as they are yours to keep. A separate deposit check of $150.00 made out to RAAA is also required when picking up equipment. (Deposit check destroyed upon return of equipment.)
Practices are Tuesday/Thursdays 6:00 – 7:30pm; 3rd grade players play only against each other in house, meaning not against any other communities. They do suit up but have limited contact in a very controlled setting. 4th grade players will progress by playing other 4th grade teams in controlled scrimmages when available. 5th and 6th grade players are divided equally and combined into teams and will play games against other communities. Some night games when available as well as the Jamboree’s on Saturday mornings.
Practices will take place at the Middle School Fields to begin each season, as we get into September we will move practices and our Rockford Jamboree up to the high school complex which are often referred to as Stadium (turf) and Fields #5 and #6 (Grass fields) behind the Stadium.
Our official season will begin August 18th and continue thru October 10th*, practicing every Tues / Thurs with the exception of no practice SEPT 3rd. Youth night is at half time of last home varsity game and equipment turn in on October 12th (6:00 – 7:30). Deadline to register is August 20th. A $25.00 late fee will be assessed to all registrants beginning on August 21st.
*We have been invited to play in a tournament over MEA weekend, this tournament will be played by Grade level. If enough interested players are available we will enter this tournament and play 3 teams – 4th Grade, 5th Grade, and 6th Grade team. Equipment turn in will be delayed for anyone playing in this tourney if we enter.

A Note to Parents and Players Regarding Youth Football / Sports From RJ
Our program strongly believes that youth athletes should play as many sports as they can for as long as they can. Sport specialization at young age should be delayed as long as possible to allow for the best all around athletic development possible. Recently Youth Football has seen reduction in participation numbers across the country due mostly to player safety in regards to concussions. Rockford youth football is progressing and developing an updated curriculum in regards to football skill, long term athletic development and player safety. Many Youth Football leagues have adopted what is commonly referred to as a “Black Stripe” policy. This policy incorporates weight limits on players who are eligible to carry the football, there are no weight limits on participation – only for carrying the football. This is an attempt to reduce injuries and maintain a safe environment for all who play the game. Unfortunately there is no perfect solution to player safety and many players feel they may be destined for a career of not being able to carry the football due to these policies. Over my career of being a football coach at the youth, high school, college, and semi pro levels, I have encountered several players that as youth were “Black Stripers” but in high school they were running backs, quarterbacks, and receivers. We will do our best to blend this policy as well as our new practice protocols to allow all players to develop at all positions of football while adhering to the policies when we are in contact situations in practice and games. New this year to Rockford Youth Football will be a “touch football league” built into our practices. Players will be put into small teams of 6-7 players and all athletes will be allowed to play all positions during this time. We will also incorporate Passing, Punting, Kicking, and Receiving skills and drills for all players so that they may continue to develop these areas of football so that they will have the same ability to play those positions when they get to middle school. We understand growth rates are different for all children and will do our best to develop all players at all positions so that they can play and enjoy the game at the youth level as well as beyond.
The standard for the weight limit policies for carrying the football are listed below:
4th Grade – 105 lbs.
5th Grade – 115 lbs.
6th Grade – 125lbs.
*The proposed tournament over MEA will be operating under the above weight limit policies.

Due to heat and coach schedules – equipment handout will be done on the following:
- 5th/6th Grade – Tuesday, August 18 @ Practice
- 3rd/4th Grade – Thursday, August 20 @ Practice
Equipment hand out will take place at the Rockford Youth Equipment Shed located adjacent to the Middle School Fields. You can google map Rockford Youth Equipment Shed for directions.
No Equipment will be worn on either of these nights so just have the boys wear t shirts/jerseys and shorts.

We have held a couple of fundraising activities this past year and are going to be asking for additional funds in any manner possible and welcome any input or donations on your behalf at this time. We also are going to need your help in coaching our youngsters; we will provide a program wide playbook to follow so no need to worry about previous coaching experience.
